The Detectorist's Code: Preserving History, One Responsible Dig at a Time
AI article

As a metal detecting dealer for 11 years, I've seen the incredible joy and historical significance that comes from unearthing treasures from the past. But with every exciting find comes a responsibility to our land, our history, and our community.
At Texhoma Metal Detectors, we believe in the "Detectorist's Code" – a set of ethical practices that ensure we can all enjoy this amazing hobby for generations to come.
Here's what responsible detecting looks like:
1. Permission is Paramount: Always, always obtain clear permission from landowners before detecting on private property.1 A simple conversation can open up incredible opportunities!
2. Know the Laws: Be aware of local, state, and federal regulations regarding metal detecting, especially in parks, historical sites, and archaeological zones. When in doubt, research or ask!
3. Leave No Trace: This is huge!
o Dig clean, small plugs.
o Carefully recover your target.
o Always backfill your holes completely and neatly. Our goal is to leave the area looking exactly as we found it (or better!).
o Pack out everything you pack in – including any trash you might find.
4. Respect Historical Finds: If you believe you've found something of significant historical or archaeological value, learn how to properly document it and consider contacting local historical societies or experts. These finds belong to all of us.
5. Be a Good Ambassador: Our actions reflect on the entire metal detecting community. Be courteous, respectful, and willing to educate others about the responsible side of the hobby.
Responsible detecting isn't just about following rules; it's about honoring the past and ensuring the future of our passion. When we dig ethically, we truly become stewards of history.
